If you suffer from acid reflux, you know how frustrating this problem can be. For a mild case of acid reflux, your doctor may recommend a few dietary and lifestyle changes designed to help the problem. Rather than take over the counter antacids that can leave a chalky aftertaste, knowing what foods to avoid and changing your diet can actually be quite beneficial at reducing acid reflux. When treating your problem, it is important to stay away from foods which are high in fat, such as those from fast food chains. Foods that have a high fat content tend to sit in the stomach longer, thereby causing your stomach to produce more acid in order to digest the food. Additionally, try eating frequent small meals throughout the day rather than three large ones. Smaller amounts of food require less acid to digest, thereby decreasing the chances of an acid reflux attack. You may also try remaining in an upright position for at least a half hour before and after you eat to prevent a flare up. While acid reflux may be frustrating, it does not have to interfere with the rest of your life. By avoiding certain foods that are known to cause a reaction, you can significantly reduce your chances of getting acid reflux. However, that does not mean you have to give up all of your favorite dishes.
