Remedies and Cures

When you suffer from heartburn, eating food can feel like a real challenge. If you've suffered for quite some time, you probably already know the foods that trigger your heartburn. However, if you haven't dealt with it for long you're not sure what types of food to avoid. The problem with heartburn is that certain foods that don't cause heartburn in one person may cause it in another, and vice versa. Below are general guidelines for the foods heartburn sufferers should try to avoid, because these foods have a higher incidence of causing heartburn than others.

For starters, most heartburn patients should try to avoid anything of the citrus variety, including orange juice, lemonade, grapefruit juice, etc. Mashed potatoes and french fries also seem to cause heartburn in a large majority of people, as do chicken nuggets and buffalo wings. Milkshakes, ice cream, cottage cheese and sour cream can possibly trigger heartburn, as can potato chips, doughnuts, coffee, liquor and tea. Of course, you may find you can eat some of these foods without a problem. As a general rule however, these foods are said to be able to cause heartburn much more frequently than anything else.

If you suffer from heartburn on a regular basis, it's important to know your triggers and to avoid them as much as possible. You may want to consider keeping a food diary for a few weeks and record everything you eat. This way, you can get an accurate picture of which foods you can eat and which you need to stay away from. Provided you make a conscious effort to avoid your "trigger foods," you can avoid heartburn almost indefinitely.
